Data breaches rise
The number of data breaches reported to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has soared in the past year. The ICO has reported 277 cases, including 80 in the private sector, 75 in the NHS and other health bodies, 28 in central Government and 26 in local authorities since November 2007. The ICO is currently investigating 30 of the most serious breaches. Following serious data breaches in the past year, including the loss of 25 million child benefit records, the ICO has taken enforcement action against a number of organisations, including HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the Ministry of Defence and the Department of Health.
